Hamlet: The Ambition of Polojius
Hamlet opens at the castle in Denamrk where King Hamlet has died recently. After the death of King Hamlet, his brother bacame king and married King Hamlet's widowed wife, Gertrude. Polonius was a friend of Claudius, and when Claudius bacame the king, Polonius a member of his council and his informant. Polonius found out that his daughter, Ophelia was seeing Prine Hamlet. Hamlet was the nephew of Claudius. Polonius then forbade Opheliato see Pronce Hamlet again; hoever, he still needed information to bring the king. Polonius used Ophelia, Hamlet, and Gertrude to gather information for Claddius and maintain his status in the court, but his actions resulted in thier deaths. Ophelia was a young girl who was in love with Prince Hamlet. Her father had raised Ophelia since her mother died when she was younger. Polonius obviously favored his older son Laertes, which can be seen through Polonius' advice and behavior toward Laertes, but since he was the only parent, Ophelia was obliged to respect and obey him. Polonius is "utterly unconcerned with Ophelia's needs, [and] manipulates both her mind and her body to gratify his love of power"(Dane 2). Gertrude loved her son, Hamlet, more than anyone else in the world. Gertrude believed that Polonius was the key in figuring out why Hamlet was behaving oddly, and that Hamlet would be helped when Polonius discovered what was wrong. Polonius again went to the king with an idea of how to gain the information about the cause of Hamlet's insanity. "My lord do as you please,but, if you hold it fit, after the play let his Queen mother all alone entreat him to show his grief" (3.1.195-197). Polonius told the king, "My lord he is going to his mother's closet. Behind the arras I'll convay myselfto hear the process. I';; warrant she'll tax him home; and as wiselt was it said, 'tis a meet that some more audience the a mother, since nature makes the patial, should o'erhear the speech of vantage. Fare you well, my liege. I'll call upon you ere you goto bed and tell you whet i know" (3.3.29-38). As Baldwin says "The scheme had been conceived by Polonius and suggested to Claudius when Gertrude was not on stage. We do not witness the King's persuading the Queen to assist in this eavesdropping upon her son, but that she had recieved specific instruction" (2).
