The Vampire Chronicles

The two books I choose to discuss today were both from the best-selling series, the Vampire Chronicles, by Anne Rice. These are Interview With The Vampire and The Vampire Lestat.

Interview With The Vampire is the story of Louis and of his journey through mortal and immortal life.

His story originates in the year 1891, in Louisiana along the Mississippi River. Louis is twenty-five and the wealthy owner of a cotton plantation; wrecked with guilt and remorse over the untimely death of his brother. Living like a "man who only wishes to die but has no courage to end it himself", he grows increasingly apathetic; an open invitation to "murderers, sailors, maniacs, theives, anybody". But ultimately it is none of these who find him first, but the resplendent and debauched vampire Lestat who against Louis's will indoctrinates him into the vampire way of life.

Following this, his story ebbs and flows through the streets of New Orleans and later Europe

These two novels present different sides of Lestat, and two very different histories from two different vampires, however I believe the two to be very similar in appeal and that somebody who liked or disliked Interview With The Vampire would share the same viewpoint regarding The Vampire Lestat and her books in general; which is probably what has earned her her cult following.

The novel moves effortlessly back in time to eighteenth century France to the twentieth century. It retells Lestat's story from since his childhood struggles against his blind father to enter the monastry, through Paris as a celebrated boulevard actor, to his making into a vampire, his battles and victories, to 1984 in reflection.

The next book in this series is The Vampire Lestat. This is Lestat's own story.

in the late eighteenth century, defining crucial moments such as his discovery of the beautiful lost child turned vampire Claudia, and the ragingly successful The
