Hopalong Cassidy

The Rustlers of West Fork, by Louis L’Amour, is a fictional story about one of the many adventures of Hopalong Cassidy. Hopalong Cassidy, the hero, is a cowboy who is delivering money to a friend, Dick Jordan. The entire book is about Hopalong’s journey to deliver the money. Dick Jordan is a long time friend of Cassidy’s and owns The Circle J Ranch. But, upon arriving to The Circle J Ranch, Cassidy finds Dick and his daughter, Pam, being held hostage by a man named Avery Sparr. So, Cassidy rescues Dick and Pam and they head for the nearest town, Alma, which is a several days ride. Cassidy is sort of unsure if they will make it. Sparr will be chasing them and Dick is crippled and can’t handle staying in the saddle for long periods of time without resting.

The Rustlers of West Fork fits very well into several topics we have covered this semester. First, the male bachelor-sub culture of the west fits Cassidy’s life like a glove. Cassidy didn’t have a specific place he would call “home.” He was continuously on the move, helping people. He was known as a good guy and helped friends out of trouble. He had no wife, girlfriend or ties to keep him in one specific place for too lon

The idea of packing up and leaving in a moment’s notice, like Dick and Pam did, is how the west was first settled. Settlers moving west didn’t plan which way they would go or where they would stay each night and what meal they would eat everyday. They just packed up and headed west with no plan. There were no

Pam proved that women played an important role in the west. Most of her responsibilities included “womanly” duties. On the trail to Alma, every time they would stop for the evening, she would begin the meal. Even if the three stopped for just a short rest, she would make coffee, immediately. She was always concerned about her father. She constantly asked how he was feeling and asked if he needed to stop. She had been caring for him for so long that she could tell by his looks if he really needed to stop, even when he insisted that he didn’t. She proved to have the maternal and care giving instincts of a woman. She was also considered an asset. She carried a gun, just like the men. At one point along the trail they ran into a tribe of Apaches. Hopalong moved in to get a closer look and shoot any if necessary. Pam joined him with her rifle. She was as willing as Cassidy to defend their safety if needed. She knew the trail would be hard and test her strength, but she didn’t complain or whine one single time. She was as strong as the men and demonstrated it well. Not only was Pam brave, but also very intelligent. In the beginning of the book, Pam sent Hopalong a letter. She encoded a message for him. It took him a while to decode, but, it said, “Help come Hoppy!” She encoded this message in the

opposition. He possessed extreme courage and bravery. He was always one hundred percent sure that his plan would work. On the road to Alma, the three, had to travel through the impossible Mogollon Mountains. Not only was this trek merely impossible, they conquered it in the snow and succeeded. Hopalong was the fastest draw in the west and everyone knew it. He had piercing blue eyes, but when he became intense and up against someone in a draw, his eyes were steel gray. Hopalong Cassidy proved to be a true cowboy hero.

stresses or questions of “what if.” Once the idea was in someone’s head, there was no stopping them. No matter what the road has in store ahead, you must pursue. This is exactly what Hopalong, Dick and Pam did. They had no time to plan or contemplate what could happen-they just did it, no questions.
