Violence in Movies and its Effect on Society

Films are written, produced, and released to the world to entertain and create ideas for everyone. There are different types of films such as: animated, action, drama, comedy, musicals, documentaries, etc. With these different categories of films why do most writers, directors, and producers feel the need to include violent and graphic scenes in their works of art. Films have become more violent as time has progressed. A Virginia Tech film critic, Stephen Prince, makes a comparison between the 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde and other movies today. The movie Bonnie and Clyde shows a scene in which the couple dies a slow-motion death. Prince states; “If one made a graph of the bar for violence from the time of Bonnie and Clyde to Taxi Driver to Natural Born Killers and Saving Private Ryan it would be an ascending line.” (Harris). This violent movie is then engraved into that particular person’s mind and could possibly create ideas of violent acts. If violence in movies causes crime then the question at hand now is: Should violence be reduced in movies or totally wiped away from films in the future?

ects and ideas. For example, Bonnie and Clyde was made in the 60’s and when Bonnie and Clyde get murdered, they die slowly with their bodies jerking and twitching in all kinds of ways. Back in the 1960’s that scene was very violent, however, in today’s society people would view this scene as a bore. The scene would barely show the bullet holes as they pierced the couple’s flesh. In society today, the filmmakers show gruesome scenes such as people getting butchered to death, shot multiple times, or even decapitation. The bloodshed and gruesome murders can be shown today because of techno
