Similar paths-- Buddha and Jesus
The lives of both the Buddha, and Jesus had a great impact on the people of their time and changed the perspectives of they and their descendants forever. Although the Buddha lived thousands of years before Jesus, their lives were very similar, and yet so different. The Buddha was born Siddhartha Gautama, a prince. Before his birth, Siddhartha’s mother dreamt that a white elephant entered her side and also that her son was born from her side. The white elephant signified the purity and power of the child to be. His mother died shortly after his birth, and was raised by his father, and aunt. At the time of his birth, it was announced that he would be either a great ruler, or a world teacher, depending on if he were to view pain and suffering. Throughout his young life, Siddhartha was sheltered from all of the impurities of the world, including death, sickness and poverty. His father would never let him outside the different palace confines. He married his beautiful cousin, Princess Yasodhara, when they were Sixteen years of age, and several years later, they had a son, Rahula. Jesus, on the other hand, was born out of wedlock, in a stable manger. The angel Gabriel told Jesus’ mother, Mary, that she would give birth to a
Siddhartha decided that he would go on a path where he would abstain from food, and that this would help him to reach enlightenment. He would eat just enough to stay alive, and in turn, his body became emaciated. His body was grotesquely thin, and weary. There was not enough nourishment in his body. Siddhartha would fall down in hunger, and the hair of his entire body fell out. Even the pigmentation of his skin was discolored. While resting under a shady tree, a woman offered him food. He gladly accepted. It was because of this that his five companions deserted him. Siddhartha then came to a conclusion. He realized that a “middle path”, where one does not have more that what is necessary to live a healthy life, but has enough so that he/she is not at the brink of starvation, was the path to enlightenment. Since his baptism, Jesus was a teacher. The first sermon of Jesus had seven parts: how to have true happiness, how to have good influence, how to regard the law, how to live a moral life, how to be Godly, how to treat others, and how to avoid being lost. Jesus said that all that are pure at heart, and are kind to others, will have eternal happiness. He also said that we are all examples to one another. If we lead a positive example, a positive reaction in others will occur, and if we lead a bad example, it will have a negative reaction to those around us. The more positive actions each of us make, the better the world will be. Jesus also stated that it is not about abiding by the law, it is honoring it in your heart as well as your mind. Living a moral life involves more than just your actions. It is your thoughts and words where it counts as well. He also stated that all promises are to be kept and love all people, no matter how they treat you. Jesus said that those who are godly are generous, they pray and they fast, and the do not worry, for they trust in God. He said not to judge others, be pure, and do for others what God would do for us. Jesus also taught those that listened to his first sermon, that the road less traveled is more often the better path and the “easy path” leads to pain and despair. Jesus concluded his sermon with “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24,25) son, who will be referred to as the Son of God; the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. At the time of Jesus’ purification, it was prophesized by Simeon, that Jesus was destined to “cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed…” (Luke 2:34-35) Siddhartha met and stayed with Alara Kalama, where he received his doctrine, and was taught the way of Akincannayatanna, or the “Realm of Nothingness”, w
