No Time: A CPS Project

There are not enough hours in a day! Common statements, similar to this one, comment on the lack of time needed to complete all of a person’s desired tasks in a given day. They exist because of the common frustration caused by the “mess” of an overly demanding schedule. People often operate on a schedule that is too demanding, and the quality and quantity of their sleep declines as they struggle to complete their inflated list of tasks. If people do not properly satisfy their need for sleep, then their bodies and minds will become weary. A person with a weary mind cannot complete a large list of tasks with the attention and precision that each task demands in order to produce quality results. The obvious and quick solution to the “mess” is to abandon the tasks that are not necessary, allowing enough time for tasks that are truly important. When people cannot reduce the number of the tasks in their daily schedules because of the significant importance that each task holds, they have a “problem” to solve. They must create a more efficient process for completing their existing schedule. How can one address the “problem” of an overly demanding schedule that cannot be reduced, incre

Help is not always available, but it should be taken advantage of when it is accessible. Foolish pride can make it impossible to get things done. Not only should help not be rejected when it is offered, but when help may be available it should be pursued. Sometimes people become overwhelmed, and have too much to handle on their own. A, “I can do it myself” attitude can cause unneeded stress and poor quality work. I have a tendency to try to do everything by myself and to reject help, so I’ve made a conscious effort to remind myself how unnecessary that kind of attitude is and to accept all of the help that I can get. Accepting help has been another successful idea and has helped me to regain some of my sanity. I’ve asked my friends and loved ones to help me with what they could when they were not busy, and I found myself beginning to have some time to relax in the evening without watching the clock. When teaching, as things begin to get overwhelming, one should not hesitate to ask others to help with tasks outside of teaching and with simple tasks like filing. It is important that teachers do all of the tasks that will help them understand where their students stand and where their students need help. Even when tests are multiple choice or there are definite answers, grading is a task that should be done by the teacher.

Tasks should not be done in excess. A person can stay occupied for an entire day on unimportant details of very important tasks. Tasks can be done more thoroughly than needed when there is extra time, but not when a person a full schedule. This idea should not be misconstrued as laziness. If a person spends too much time on one task, then all of the other tasks suffer. It is easy to get caught up in details, especially when people are passionate about what they are doing. I never had a real problem with this, but as I am constructing a model I felt that it needed to be covered. I did notice myself getting a little carried away with my tasks once or twice, and by limiting myself I was able to precede to the next activity. Teachers are given a specific block of time to teach a given subject field. It becomes tempting to delve too deeply into a particular aspect of the subject or to stray from the topic in discussion. Discussion is good, but it must only p
