Much was going on in England and Northern Ireland in 1974. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) was at the peak of a terrorist campaign. Religious wars were occurring in Ireland at the time. Catholics and Protestants were battling with one another. Both religious communities were like hostile armed camps. The British attempted to step in to separate the two; however, found themselves as targets of the Catholics.

How does one hold faith in a system that they believe in that works against them? The government is supposed to be their to help and protect you but when the government you trust attacks you it becomes difficult to keep your faith in the system. This can lead to people giving up on the system and admitting to crimes they did not commit and other grave miscarriages of justice.

The IRA and Iraqis, however, didn’t see themselves as terrorists. They saw themselves as freedom fighters. The IRA saw themselves as trying to protect their means to unify Northern Ireland and keep the British government from interfering. This was basically the same for Iraqis. The Iraqis supposedly attacked because of the U.S. Military’s interventions in the Middle East. Like Britain, the U.S. had passed a USA Patriot Act. This law allowed indefinite imprisonment without trial of non- US citizens who have been suspected of being a threat to the United State’s national security. It also permitted authorities to obtain warrants to search the alleged detainee’s residence without their knowledge if the Attorney general had decided that this would become an issue of national security.
