Ben Hur Movie Review
The movie begins with the scene of the birth of our Lord in Jerusalem. The three wise men appear over the child and bring their gifts. The movie then shifts to the next day when the Roman Soldiers march into Jerusalem. Messala, second in command in the Roman army and childhood friend to Ben Hur, confronts Ben asking him to give up his fellow people who oppose Roman law. Because Ben refuses to give up his people, Messala becomes angry and vows revenge. Messala is able to gain that revenge when he blames the accident during the parade on Ben Hur, calling it an attempted assassination. The Romans then take Ben Hur prisoner along with his mother and sister. For his punishment he is sent to row in the galleys of ships. One day he is able to walk around the ship and confronts the captain. He has a chance to kill the captain easily, but does not. Being grateful for not killing him and for being a nice man, the captain rewards Ben by not chaining him up like every other rower when they go into battle. During battle they are rammed and the ship is sunk. Ben frees lots of the slaves after he kills the guard and takes the keys. Then Ben goes on to save the captain, gaining his trust and intriguing him to learn more about Ben. He takes Ben as
a slave and teaches him to be a great charioteer. After finally earning his freedom Ben goes to meet an Arab man that has raised four great white horses. Ben uses these horses to return to the Coliseum and confront Messala. Messala is so well known as a great charioteer, and has won the annual chariot race each of the last four years. In one of the greatest scenes I have ever witnessed, Ben Hur is able to defeat Messala, gaining much respect. Before Messala is killed he tells Judah where his mom and sister and prisoner. Ben Hur then rushes to see them in the cave that they are in. In order to prevent his sister from being afraid of dying, Judah takes her to see Jesus. It is actually the final walk for Jesus when he is carrying the cross down the street. Judah tries to help Jesus when he falls by giving him water. When the mother and sister return to the cave, the water from the thunderstorm mixes with Jesus’ blood, so when they drink it they are cured of leprosy. When Judah returns after the crucifixion, he declares how he wishes to not fight again. It actually ends kind of happy because Judah and his mother and sister are able to live happily in peace. I like the overall message given by this movie. I found the element of forgiveness to be very prominent. So on top of portraying the way of life lived way back then, they find time to include a message and theme of forgiveness into this movie. I can
