Life Is Beautiful

Most of us have heard about Hitler. We barely know about him and his Nazi movement but we hate him. Our knowledge is limited to Jewish persecutions in the 1940’s and we imagine Jews suffering to death in concentration camps. We all conceive the Nazi movement as a horrible episode in history, as a nonsense fight where men do not act like human beings. Some of us might have taken the time to place ourselves in that bloody scenario, some as a persecuted man, and others as a woman who sees how her husband is wrest away. War might be seen from diverse point of views, for example economical, social, ethical, or emotional perspective. However Roberto Benigni shares with us a magical perspective of this Jewish struggle for survival, he tells a story based in a kid’s emotions. The writer relays on a kid to demonstrate how grown-ups have led our world into a nonsense everyday fight.

Roberto Benigni, born in Italy in 1952, was the younger in his family. He grew up in rural Italy. Economic times were hard during the post-World War II era, and the family lived without running water and electricity for much of Roberto’s childhood. When he was 12 years old, a local priest enrolled him in a seminary in Flore

Giosue was the only Jewish boy left; the only other kids that he saw were the sons and daughters of German officers. The situation was critical, everybody was fighting for survival, everybody was suffering. Guido had hope, his little boy and lovely wife were his inspiration. That horrible situation was not the best for a five year old kid. Guido had two goals, blind Giosue of all the death and save his family. He used his charm and love to make this possible.

“We won, we won! We came in first. We are taking the tank home. We won!” Giosue happily shouted while hugging his mom. Behind this word of innocence there is the author’s main point: Giosue really won. He won because his mind never perceived such fierce fight. He won because although the world surrounding him was a constant threat he never realized it. He won because he never hated anyone. He won because his life was still a happy game for him. The author’s message is simple. Throughout the story, with the help of logos, ethos and pathos, Roberto Benigni is trying to sell us a world full of peace where hate and war don’t exist, a world we destroyed long ago.

In the movie Guido is full of pathos, ethos and logos. His emotions led him to work hard to gain Dora’s love. His feelings toward his wife and son motivate him to fight for survival. His feelings are stronger than his own instinct; he prefers to follow his heart instead of running away from death. He was his son’s example, he lived for his wife. He always worked hard. Although he knew many people hated him for being Jewish he never thought that was a reason for him to hate others. Once Giosue asked his him “Why are not Jews and dogs allowed to go in this store?” He answered smiling, “they just do not want dogs or Jews to go in. Everybody does what they want to. There is a hardware store over there. They do not let Spanish people or horses into the store.” The boy said “we let everyone go into our store.” Guido was a man of good will, who gave his life for others’ happiness. Near the end of the movie, the author empath
