The Crucible

The Theme in this book is that of good versus evil.
witch trials of the late 17th century, The Crucible discovers the Difficulties of a .
changing society and the difficulty of doing good in the face of evil and .
a lot of social influences, both at the social and personal level. John .
Proctor, the protagonist of the play, is faced with the choice of accepting .
responsibility for his actions and doing the right thing. In a similar example, .
society as a whole must deal with the challenge of doing good when .
threatened by evil, even when it comes with choosing death over life. every character in the play is looked upon with suspicion by his or her .
neighbor. The good people are punished while the evil triumphs. But throughout the novel it slowly unfolds characters individual traits both positive and negative. .
For Example Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams Both have completely different characteristics Abigail Williams is trouble right from the start, And has something against Elizabeth Proctor for example in Act1her response to her Uncles question was "She hates me, uncle, she must, for I would not be her slave. It's a bitter woman, a lying cold sniveling woman, and I would not work for such a woman!"(12) This is the first we hear of Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail lies without shame, threatens without fear, and thinks of nothing of sticking a needle two inches into her own belly in order to bring about the murder of Elizabeth Proctor. Which occurs in Act 2 (pg78-79) And she gets away with most of it. .
But when we finally meet Elizabeth herself,(In Act 2) she seems pretty cool toward her husband, John. And if she's not exactly bitter about John's fling with Abigail, she isn't happy about it either. For Example on page 58 In Act 2 Elizabeth says " I do not Judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought of you but a good man, John only somewhat bewildered." (58) She has a right to be jealous, and suspicious, too, especially when she finds out that the last time John was in town he saw Abigail alone- not in a crowd, as he had first told her.
