Feeling discouraged and inadequate happens to all of us, but when these feelings become a way of life, or even frequent visitors, they start to tear us down first mentally and then physically. Some of the symptoms of depression are persistent sadness, lack of energy, and suicidal thoughts. In “Paul’s Case” written by Willa Cather is a story that tell us how the main characters is forced into depression by supposedly those who love him.
In the story “Paul’s Case” written by Willa Cather we read in the beginning that Paul seems to be happy even though he is being ridiculed by his teachers. Although he was being ridiculed “He stood through it smiling his pale lips parted over his white teeth”. (pg 126) For some reason as I was reading this I perceived Paul to be a joker. Someone that was witty, funny, and somebody you could picture being the class clown. .
When Paul went to work I felt that Paul was extremely happy as if he was living a very good dream. At work he was cheerful. “He was a model usher: gracious and smiling he ran up and down the isles” “he c
arried messages and brought programs as though it were his greatest pleasure in life. ”(pg. 127) This is what you read at the beginning of the story. From the time that he was at the theatre we knew his dream and his fantasy. He wanted to live like the stars.
When Paul goes to work he couldn’t stand it anymore. He was to depressed. As the result he did what he had to do which was to steel money from the job and run away. Paul ran away to New York so that he could try to pursue his dream. For a little while Paul was living the life of a star.
Later on we read that Paul’s father and his teacher decides that Paul’s is affecting his schooling. Then Paul's father takes him out of school and forces him to work for a company referred to only as the firm of Denny and Carson as an office boy. His father also forbids Carnegie Hall from hiring him again and that he didn’t want his son to go there again. It’s really sad to see how a father could ruin his sons dream.
