World Poker Tour
Imagine sitting on your couch flipping through the channels and hearing someone say, "We've got a set of cowboys up against a pair of cowboy killers." You might think you are watching a Wild West movie, but you've probably stumbled across the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel. The World Poker Tour is a TV show that airs every Wednesday night at 8 pm Central Time. They offer an encore presentation of the program that starts at 11 pm Central Time as well. If you like fast, exciting poker playing, with witty color commentary, this is the show for you. The show features high stakes betting, fast-paced action, sights and sounds from all around the globe, and commentary from the co-hosts. The World Poker Tour focus’s on Texas Hold’em. In Texas Hold'em poker every player receives 2 face-down cards for themselves, and all of the players share 5 face-up, community cards. Like other poker variations, the winner is the player who has the strongest poker hand (the best combination of all communal cards and private cards), or is the last remaining player. The betting action goes clockwise from the player after the dealer, the three options a player can choose are betting, checking, or folding.
The commentators, Vince Van Patten and Mike Sexton, are very witty and professional. These two guys know a lot about poker: they have played in and have had a lot of experience in poker tournaments and games. Their knowledge is shown every time they talk about a hand; sometimes they talk about what a player could possibly be thinking, and another time they could be just cracking jokes or telling stories. One exciting aspect of the show is that the viewers get to see what cards the players are holding. They have a “hole-card cam” that shows the TV viewers the cards. The commentators do a virtual play-by-play to the viewers. This show is something to see and I suggest it to everyone who enjoys playing card games or someone who just likes to see high stakes gambling. The World Poker Tour is just what it says. Each week the show has a different host casino. The different venues that have played host to the Tour are as follows: Bellagio, Las Vegas, NV, Bicycle Casino, Los Angeles, CA, Ultimate Bet Tourney of Champions, Aruba, Casinos Europa, San Jose, Costa Rica, Lucky Chances, Colma, CA, Foxwoods, Mashantucket, CT, Binion’s Horshoe Casino, Tunica, MS, Aviation Club de France, Paris, France, Commerce Casino, Los Angeles, CA, Reno Hilton, Reno, NV. Each venue brings a different breed of poker players. For example, when they played in France, 6 of the final 9 players were top French Professionals.
