Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia nervosa is a serious, often chronic, and life threatening eating disorder. In today’s society there are many misunderstandings regarding this disorder. People who suffer from this disorder are often misunderstood and they are frequently “blamed” for being anorexic. There are many causes, behavior and medical symptoms and treatment for this illness. In this paper I hope to explain to the reader the reasons behind this troubling disorder.There are many causes of anorexia – the ranges of causes include problems with family members, or social problems, and variety of other reasons. “Scientists have studied the personalities, genetics, environments, and biochemistry of people with this illness. Certain personality traits in a person with anorexia have low self esteem, social isolation, and perfectionism.”(“Anorexia Nervosa”) This finding suggests that genetic, behavioral and environmental influences may also take place in this illness. Other behaviors could be that they might develop strange eating habits like cutting their food into tiny pieces, refusing to eat in front of others, or fixing big meals for others that they themselves don’t eat.” On the website “Life Span” doctors showed more serious problems due to anorexia. There are complications that are related to anorexia like heart disease which includes irregular heart rhythms, blood flow is reduced, blood pressure may drop and cholesterol levels might rise. There also could be an electrolyte imbalance which is caused by dehydration and starvation which can reduce fluid and mineral levels which can be life threatening. “Neurological problems can come about in which the person could suffer nerve damage and experience seizures, disordered thinking, loss of feeling and other nerve problems in the hands or feet.
