Globalization vs. Protectionism

In the modern age, we have seen progressively diminishing borders and boundaries that once separated the world and its people. Although we look at the idea of the shrinking world as a new one, the idea of global shrinking has been around since civilizations began to trade with one another. Because of globalization, the world has had to adjust and redevelop its self in the new image. Now countries are not bound by the lack of natural resources or a small labor force because it is no longer necessary to have to have all of these resources to compete in the global market place. Globalization has already done a great deal of good for the world, but at the same time has destroyed the cultures of various countries and taken away unique local economies.

Many people around the world feel threatened by this global community and free trade. They are worried that jobs are going to be taken away. The United States is making the transition from a manufacturing based economy to a service based economy. This shift in manufacturing has a caused a great loss of low income jobs. People are no longer able to graduate from high school and get a job working in a mill their whole lives. No longer are people able to li

As the richest and strongest nation in the world, we have a responsibility to help out the world, for the good of the world. But determining whether globalization is good for the world should not rest only solely our nation and other powerful nations, but should include many other weaker nations. As for now I say that we all try to fix the problems that plague our nation, in turn we will have a better idea of how to fix the problems of the world.

An idea that is intertwined with globalization, but not frequently talked about is Americanization. Americanization is the process of spreading the so called “American ideals” to other countries in this world. This relates to globalization because with multinational corporations now controlling world trade, it means that there will be less variety of products to choose from since only a few corporations are manufacturing them. Other countries will be subject to purchasing goods that were created for Americans and our society. This in turn will cause not only the world to be transformed by globalization, but also to conform to Americanization because they have very little choice. McDonald’s is spreading their influence all over the world. They now have fast food locations in 119 different countries. This is one of many examples of the vast Americanization that is reshaping our world because of the ongoing globalization. In other cases such as music and clothing, Americanization is spreading its influence and manufacturers are reaping the benefits.

To help me find more information to support my arguments on the affects of globalization and what is best for the world, it would be helpful to speak to the heads of various global organizations and multinational corporations. It would also be helpful to see if there was some type of global news paper that addressed how people in these developing countries viewed globalization. To know if they felt that it was good for the world, or if they felt they were just being exploited and used by the few rich of the world. Lastly it would be helpful if I could travel around the globe to view the affects of globalization in various areas.
