When walking the long path towards town, Phoenix Jackson comes across the obstacle of her physical being. She is very old and her sight is bad, but still she trudges on using an umbrella as her cane. Many obstacles tried her. One such described by Welty as, “a barbed wire fence. There she had to creep and crawl(88)”. That is one of the many things that tried the old woman, but still she trudged on. Phoenix had a bad memory which was demonstrated in the story when she is at the doctors office and the nurses are asking her questions about her grandson and she does not answer. “My grands

Even though the path that Jackson took was long and trying she took it just to get the medicine for her grandson. Not only did she take the path, but she took it several times. Welty shows this by demonstrating Jackson’s familiarity with it. When Jackson came across the log she, “mounted the log and shut her eyes(88)”. That is something only someone who is comfortable and familiar with a place could do. So even though the path Jackson had to take had “wild animals(87)”, “thorny bushes(87)”, and was very long and tiresome, Jackson trudged on time after time to get the medicine.

Phoenix Jackson showed much strength in this piece of literature because even though she was physically and mentally old and worn, she would not let any physical or mental obstacles get in her way. The love for her grandson gave her the strength she needed to complete her long and rough trip.
