Senior Season

Centerville football has always had a long and rich tradition of dominating the gridiron. For over thirty years Centerville was the team every team in the area wanted to beat. For one, because we were the so-called “rich kinds”, and second because losses were something that the football team seldom experienced. That is until my senior year. We produced the worst record in over thirty years. Before my senior year a bad team at least won seven out of ten games. But in our case, we went 3-7. I know that if you played on a team that bad, you need to find some reason to justify to yourself and others why the season was so grim. We had little experience, a plague of injuries, and a new head coach.

When it comes down to it, football is not just a game of brute strength; it is also a matter of execution. Players who have been seasoned year after year in the art of playing football best carry out execution. Such as the retired John Elway, there should have been no way in the final stages of his career he should have been able to compete with men almost half his age. What kept him dominating the game was his experience in execution. Going into my final season we only had six returning starters and a handful of letterm

an. The rest of the team would be comprised of sophomores, and, unfortunately, they tend to be weaker and slower then the upper classman, let alone have any idea how much faster of a pace varsity is from freshman football. To make matters worse, at any given time throughout the season we only had two seniors playing due to the staggering number of knee injuries.

How a coach performs has many parallels to that of a player execution and experience. This was Coach Ullerys’ first season as head coach. Filling the shoes of his predecessor, Bob Gregg, was no easy task. Coach Gregg has the most wins in Division I wish school football. Ron Ullery had been an assistant to Bob Gregg for thirty years as the offensive coordinator, so it was unquestionable Ron knew the ropes of Centerville football, and how the game was played, it was that he lacked the experience of getting the team fired up at games. Bob Gregg could get a player so pumped up before a game by giving a colorful speech about how the other team’s intention was to disrespect us, and take away all that we worked so hard for during endless practices and conditioning sessions. He could get a player so pumped up that they would literally tear up with anger towards the other team. Where as Ron would come out and give dry details
