Understanding American Psycho merely as a criticism of the eighty’s era in no way gives justice to the complexities of the text. Undeniably, certain passages in the film are disturbing, which in turn causes people to interpret it in such a negative manner. “These people not only missed the boat, but the entire ocean with this conclusion,” stated Dustin Putman in response to the critics. American Psycho offered a right-on-target satirical view of the '80s--full of conceited egos, wealth and power, and materialistic excess. In other words, Ellis may have been lightly poking fun, but there was a startling amount of truth in everything he wrote, right down to the minuscule details. Set in 1987 during good financial times, America's values are shown to be off center. Times have gotten even better since then. So where are we now? American Psycho may be much more real than it seems.

Donal (Willem Dafoe) is a detective who figures Bateman must be involved in the disappearance of a fellow stockbroker, Jared (Paul Allen). You begin to figure this may be a fantasy because Donal is a little too soft in his questioning techniques. He invites Bateman out to lunch to ask him where he was the night of Jared's disappearance.

Bateman's has an executive assistant, Jean, who could love him. She keeps a respectful distance nevertheless, as does he, because he is sane enough to know that he is insane and they don't belong together.
