Drinking and Driving

My night started as a beautiful April evening. It wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. The day felt like any other day. Little did I know, it would turn into the most dreaded night of any normal teenager’s life. I was dropped off at my former boyfriend, Flory’s house, by my mother. I was only 15 at the time so it wasn’t like I was going to be driving there.

I expected to be spending the night with him like any other night, maybe watching a movie or perhaps going to get something to eat. It turned out he had made plans with his friend to go to a bar and watch his buddy’s band play. I didn’t argue with him because I didn’t want to upset him. Even though I was disappointed, I didn’t let that discourage the rest of my night. Flory’s best friend’s girlfriend was at his house so I told her my best friend, Kristen, was throwing a party that night. I said we should go there to have fun since the guys were going out. She was new in town so it would be a perfect chance for her to meet new people. By the time we got there it was around 10:30 at night. The party was already well under way. As we pulled up to the house, we were lucky to get a parking spot right in the driveway. There were cars scattered all

By the description he could barely give of the bodies, it hit me as to who they were. It was Brian, Kim, Cortney, and Mowad. Those four were always together no doubt about it, and Mowad drove the Rodeo.

I couldn’t breathe and I started crying hysterically. I dropped to my knees and started shaking. No one understood what was going on. I knew who they were and they didn’t. Everything that was happening to me seemed as though I was watching it in a movie. But no, this was real life; this was a slap in my face. All my friends, and me including, always think we’re invincible, that these kinds of things would never happen to us, but it just did.

“I was still driving and came upon a cloud of dust. The vehicle had wrecked.

“There was an accident. An Isuzu Rodeo sideswiped my car. I turned my car around to make sure they were all right. They had already sped off and were a mile ahead of me. I wasn’t able to keep up with them and it wasn’t like I was chasing them either.”

Flory came home soon after and we walked across the street to his grandmother’s to get something to eat. This was around 12:30 in the morning. We were over there for a while when his dad pulled up outside. It wasn’t like him to be coming there and not going home and going to bed. We walked outside to talk to him. His dad was trembling and shaking uncontrollably. When he began talking, my body went numb. I was putting two and two together in my head when no one else knew what was going on.

Ever since the accident, my life has changed immensely. More precautions are taken at parties. The drinking and driving amongst my friends has lessened to a minimum. My friends and I finally realized that we are not invincible. Before the accident, no one cared how much he or she drank before they drove. It didn’t matter to us; it wasn’t of any concern. Now, more of my friends are staying where they are at or there is a designated driver. If neither of that happens than keys are taken so they definitely can not drive. It came to all of our attention that the parties and the drinking can’t be stopped amongst us, but the drinking and driving can be stopped.
