My Opinion Of David Delafields Work

My opinion of David Delafield's Work.
College Reading And Writing As I look around at the exhibition of David Delafield one section of it caught my eye. I walked back to the right corner of the hall. Here was a collection of self portraits that Delafield constructed over his artistic career. I took three self-portraits that stood out to me of David Delafield, that he produced roughly twenty years apart from each other. These pieces, tucked away in one of the corners of the exhibition hall, were displayed in a chronological order.
The first piece I chose to analyze gives us a look at one of his earlier self portraits. Delafield finished the portrait around 1945. The 18"X12" encaustic self-portrait has a background of reddish-pink color. It depicts a young Delafield with a very stern look on his face. Delafield represented himself possibly in his Army greens. The picture has a very angry and somewhat scary feeling about it. I felt that his eyes in this portrait were following me around the hall. It reminded me much of a mug shot of a serial killer. His face shown long and thin express's perhaps a dark period of his life. The emotional sense of this piece, in my opinion, might have something to do with the fact that he constructed this portrait shortly after being discharged from the Army. This definitely is not one of my favorite art pieces. Although being great artwork it has a very uneasy feeling to it. .
A I move down the wall the next portrait that stood out, painted about twenty-six years later, again had a very cold look to it. The charcoal, pastel, and watercolor portrait has a light blue background. The face, much like the self-portrait done in 1945, has somewhat of a long face. This portrait reminded me of a mad scientist. He looked somewhat crazy like in this piece. Except with this piece the face is wider in comparison. Comparing it the first work, I feel this photo continues on with that sort of cold look.
