Violence in TV

In today’s society, one of the biggest influences in an American’s life is the television. Considering that most Americans have an average of 2.5 television sets in their homes and watch an average of three to four hours of programming a day, the television has made its way into our everyday life. With television being such a huge portion of the American life, it is becoming an even bigger portion of our children’s lives. With American adults having less and less time due to work, careers and the amount of activities they assume, American children are watching more and more television.

Being part of the Television Department and having the power of a potential media maker, I have always believed that the television is an important tool in one’s life, but it all depends on what is being watched. I believe that as the times are changing, television is also changing. It is producing shows with less morals and values and the viewers are just becoming more immune to what is being shown. But with our children seeing the television more than we did as we were growing up, it is more important now than ever to see how our children are reacting to what is being shown to them on the television.

“…Children in the United States are exposed to numerous violent scenes through television because they view a lot of television and because violent acts are portrayed frequently on television. This results in both negative behavioral and social consequences.”

The articles both dealt with a phenomenon, which they call “scary world”. Children, as they are growing up, are quite naive and seem to have that child like innocence about them. Children who are heavy viewers of violent television programming have a tendency to view the world as a “scary place”, especially in many cases where the child can identify with the victims of the mean or scary incidents on television.

As a conclusion to both articles, I would have to say that the authors believe in the same theory. Violent programming on television, in addition to the amount of time children are exposed to television has an adverse affect on the personality of that child. In most cases, this effect results in a more aggressive child, or one that is less affected by violent situations around him or her. They also both conclude that most young children fall into the “Scary World” ideology, in which many cases, cause this child to view the world around them as a scary place.

Another article found in the “Journal of Psychology entitled Children’s Attitudes towards Violence on Television,” had to do with much of the same subject as the previous article. The author was writing about an experiment that was performed where children attending a local school were given a 47-item questionnaire.

Both of the articles shared many similarities. Both of the authors seemed to come to the same conclusion that children exposed to more violent television programming seem to be more violent, or aggressive themselves, and less affected by violence around them. This is shown through the tone of their article. They seem to hold strong to showing evidence from their experiment, as well as many others, of which they cite, that show violent programming on television affects children.

Another study took place where two groups of children watched a film one group watching a violent film, the other a nonviolent film. Afterwards, they were put into a situation where the children were to watch several kids, and if something happened, wer
