Comparison of early modern and modern english articles

Considering both texts are based around the same theme, there are extreme differences in content. The most evident difference between the texts is the content and length of the piece. The earlier piece focuses more closely on the building and exceptions of the “floating architecture”, hardly touching on the actual sinking of the ship. Much more emphasis is placed on the “slow creation” of the “gigantic vessel”, describing it before it even set sail. Many descriptive features are used, for example tripartite structures; “thousands of pounds of electric power, thousands of pounds for the men employed, thousands of pounds in the valuable matter expended.” Here, the list of three highlights the vast quantities of money needed to build the ship, therefore exaggerating exactly how much of a “great palace” Titanic really was. In the same way, emphasis is put on the size of the ship, using modifiers such as “gigantic”, “huge” and “enormous”, which constantly remind us of the sheer volume of the “sea home.” The writer also selects his lexis carefully; for example he hardly uses the proper noun “Titanic”, as he is able to use common nouns such as “sea-home” and “palace”. These nouns provoke c

onnotations of comfort and luxury, again helping to stress the extravagance of the ship.

The paragraphs are much shorter than the earlier text, which is common in tabloid papers. For example “Happily, everyone survived but it all could have been so different,” stands on its own as a paragraph. There is much less detail in the Sun article than in the earlier piece, reflecting a sign of the times.

Features of spoken language are also used occasionally. For example, the writer directly addresses the reader, “you see”. By using the second person pronoun, “you”, the writer gives the illusion that he is talking directly to the reader, allowing for a more informal relationship to be formed. “And then the launch,” by using an incorrect sentence (where a conjunction is employed to start a sentence), a more conversational tone is applied, again helping to create a more informal, direct address. To create a more formal address, sophisticated lexis is used through the piece for example “…warning the philosophers about the grain of sand mightily influential…” and “labouring with trained minds and obedient bodies.” This adds to the sense of the occasion, and helps to set a more formal tone, suggesting a more credible author.

However the Modern English article is much, much shorter and approaches the “near-disaster” much differently. Unlike the natural, more calm and unnerving title from the e
