Violence was abundant in The Lower End. Michael talks about the kids reenacting the fights in slow motion blow by blow. As time goes on, the kids start acting out the shootings shot by shot. Everybody considered him the king of Southie, more powerful than his brother the senator. Whitey protected everybody from the drugs and gangs of black neighborhoods, or at least convinced everybody of that. In reality, Whitey didn’t protect Southie from anything. Whitey brought in the drugs, and all the crime that went along with them. Whitey killed a generation.

Poverty is a problem all over, not just in Boston’s South End. It also isn’t going away, given our economic system. There will always be some gap between the haves, and the have-nots. The cure shouldn’t be based on dissolving the gap, but maintaining the gap. Stop this continuous process where the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. The government shouldn’t, and can’t, provide every person in need with a check. The federal, state and local governments, as well as private citizens, do need to provide social programs for the poor. But, more importantly, somebody needs to protect against another situation like Southie again, an area with such a high concentration of poverty, low diversity, and one man controlling everybody’s mind.

Michael MacDonald lost three brothers to the violent life style of South Boston, and the family members who survived lost their innocence. The crime and drugs took their tool on the MacDonald family, as well as all of South Boston. Whitey Bulger saw an opportunity to take advantage of a town. He brought the crime and drugs into a poverty-ridden area, and ran away with the hopes and dreams of a generation.
