Piagets theoey of cognitive development
Five year old Jenny and Ten year old Bobby are in two very different levels in relation to the theory of Piaget’s stages of Cognitive Development. Jenny, unlike Bobby, may have trouble identifying the same amount of fluid in a differently shaped glass as the same amount, whereas Bobby may have no trouble at all. Jenny will tend to be much more egocentric than Bobby, while he has a perception of other’s minds. Bobby will be able to achieve some reversibility and other logic while Jenny is still entirely unable to do this. Jenny’s perception of categorization is still made up of simple colors, shapes, or letters, while Bobby understands more specific boundaries. Jenny, not as developed as Bobby, is in the Preoperational stage of development, while her older brother is in the Concrete Operational stage, in accordance to Piaget. Being in the Preoperational Stage of Development, Jenny may have great trouble perceiving that the same amount of milk, for example, poured into differently shap
In the Concrete Operational stage of development, Bobby is now able to think with more logic as well as identify with reversibility. Bobby is beginning to be able to figure out concrete problem solving, for example, in arithmetic, Bobby can be told to add three and four, and he would proceed to write 3+4=7, then when asked to subtract four from seven, he sees the relationship and writes 7-4=3. Even if Jenny was able to perform simple adding like this, she could not be able to see the reversibility in the other problem, they would appear as two completely different problems. Jenny is most likely able to perform the task of categorizing (anything in this case) but her ability to do so is much more limited than that of Bobby’s. Jenny may be able to classify objects by shape, size or color, while Bobby would be able to categorize by number or type. Bobby, for example, can classify species of animals, while Jenny may view many different types of animals as the same. This furthers the differenc
