Civil engineering

Civil engineers design and supervise the construction roads, structures, tunnels, airports, dams, bridges, and water and sewage systems. Some specialize in water resource, environmental, construction, transportation, structural, and geotechnical engineering. Many civil engineers work as supervisors or administrators, sometimes supervising a construction site or being a city engineer. Other civil engineers work in design, research, teaching, or construction. Most working conditions are not uncomfortable, potentially hazardous, or unusual.
A bachelor's degree for engineering is required for most civil engineering jobs. Degrees in physical science or math aid in specialty jobs. Architectural engineering, general civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation and highway engineering, water resources engineering, and other civil engineering educational programs help in the civil engineering field. Also a license to practice civil engineering is required in most states.
Civil engineers need many mental and some physical skills to succeed. Some of these basic mental skills include reading comprehension, active listening, writing, speaking, math, science, critical thinking, active learning, learning strategies, and monitoring. Other more advanced skills are needed like social skills, problem solving, resource management, and technical and equipment skills. Physical demands on a civil engineer are light. Civil engineers need near vision, speech clarity, manual and finger dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.
Civil engineers are often employed in large cities or areas of urban growth. The work force demand is medium sized with 232,046 workers in the year 2000. Job openings will be very small with an average 6,000 annual openings between 2000 and 2010. The outlook is stable with employment changes from 2000 to 2010 estimated to be +10.2%. Civil engineering skills are also used in other industries including engineering and architectural services, state government, local government, and federal government.
