Tale of Two Cities
In the novel, A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens incorporates a web of many characters whose lives are all intermingled with secrets, love, hate, sorrow, and pity. They either despise each other, or love each other. The two main characters that are the most similar, yet the most opposite in nature are Sydney Carton and Charles Darney. On the bases of appearance, one might think that they are doubles, however upon further scrutiny, they are opposites in their characteristic qualities.The two men look identical to the extent that no one knows who is who when they are together. When Sydney and Charles are in the court room, for the trial of Darney, they are standing next to each other and someone says, "My Lord being prayed to bid my learned friend lay aside his wig, and gibing no very gracious consent, the likeness became much more remarkable."(Dickens p90-91) Sydney and Charles also love the same woman, Lucie Mannette. Carton wasted his life till the end when he died in place of his double, and Darney realized that he was living the wrong life style and turned it around. These two characters would not have been able to do everything that they did without knowing and helping each other. The differences that Dickens bestowed upon Carton and Darney is mainly in how they live their lives. It took Sydney Carton his whole life to realize what he could do to make it better and to benefit the people that he loved and cared about. Darney realized this sooner in his life by leaving his uncle's house in France and starting over because he knew that it was not right if he were to stay there.
