Beowulf was a great fighter reputed by many to have the strength of thirty men. As like all noblemen, Beowulf was in search of fame and glory when he got wind of a horrible monster named Grendel. Grendel, being jealous of the partying of merry men in the mead hall next to him, attacked killing thirty of the king’s best men. However, Grendel, being the spawn of Cain, did not stop there. He terrorized the famed mead hall Heorot for over eleven years. Although Beowulf was from Geatland, he traveled to the neighboring nation of Denmark to fight the beast with fourteen of his best men. Unfortunately, the terror that has been brought upon Hrothgar and his men was far but over. While Hrothgar and his noblemen celebrated in their famed mead hall that has finally been reclaimed, Grendel’s mother sought vengeance in her son’s death by carrying of Hrothgar’s best thane Aeschere and murdering him. Once again the hero to our story was called to slay yet another beast. This time, however, was different. Before going into Grendel’s mother’s swampy and dreary underworld, he once again made the speech of how he was going to rid the Danes of the last beast that was reeking havoc upon their country. But before going into the dreadful like, he does something unusual—he arms himself with a sheath, a helmet, and a sword. He swims down for what seems to be eternity before he reaches the monster’s lair. Beowulf tries to kill her with his sword, but an ancient spell done on the beast made any man-made sword useless to her semi-impermeable skin. Grendel’s mother nearly defeats Beowulf and would have succeeded if it weren’t for his sheath. While Beowulf was clenched in her grip, he saw a massive sword made by giants upon the huge treasure lying within her home. Fortunately, Beowulf, having the strength of thirty men, lifted the sword to thrust it into the monster finally defeating her.
