Beowulf: The Changes Undergone
Beowulf is the oldest English epic, but it appears not to be about English people. Rather, it is a story about Danes and Geats. The author of Beowulf is unknown. The story was sung for centuries before someone wrote it down. Beowulf is a long, serious narrative poem about aristocratic persons-the kings and heroes of Denmark and Geatland- involved in a series of action, significant in the development of a nation, and unified by the Geatish hero, Beowulf. Beowulf goes through a series of three battles, but in each situation, Beowulf’s motives and actions vary. Beowulf was a great fighter reputed by many to have the strength of thirty men. As like all noblemen, Beowulf was in search of fame and glory when he got wind of a horrible monster named Grendel. Grendel, being jealous of the partying of merry men in the mead hall next to him, attacked killing thirty of the king’s best men. However, Grendel, being the spawn of Cain, did not stop there. But before going into the dreadful like, he does something unusual—he arms himself with a sheath, a helmet, and a sword. He swims down for what seems to be eternity before he reaches the monster’s lair. Beowulf tries to kill her with his sword, but an ancient spell done on the beast made any man-made sword useless to her semi-impermeable skin. Grendel’s mother nearly defeats Beowulf and would have succeeded if it weren’t for his sheath. While Beowulf was clenched in her grip, he saw a massive sword made by giants upon the huge treasure lying within her home. Fortunately, Beowulf, having the strength of thirty men, lifted the sword to thrust it into the monster finally defeating her. Meanwhile, the crowd of people waiting upon Beowulf’s return from the lake slowly diminished believing Grendel’s mother had brought an end to our young he
