The Night

The poem Acquainted with the Night was written by Robert Frost in 1928. It revolves around a character who has become comfortable and accustomed to living after hours. The first stanza describes the narrators journey through the pouring rain. The second stanza is an account of the narrators confrontation with the neighborhood watchman and how he avoids him. In the third stanza he describes himself as being alone and hearing the joyous cries coming from others. He continues in the fourth stanza by emphasizing his loneliness and the haunting sight of the full moon. The fifth stanza and final two lines show how the narrator has become a part of the night and that there isn’t really anything right or wrong about it.


In the first stanza Frost shows the characters loneliness through where the character goes. “I have out walked the furthest city light (ll. 3).” The lights of the city mark its limits and he has left the city and the rest of civilization. Alone and in the dark, the narrator has fled from the city to be alone almost intentionally. He chooses to be alone. Even the first line shows the solitude that the narrator lives with. He has become “one aquatinted with the night (ll. 1) .” As lame as it might sound he is the “one” who is one with the night. There isn't anyone else there with him.
