What really matters

After reading the last book of Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, one main theme seemed to be the most prevalent and emphasized throughout the text. This idea is that there is really only one thing that Christianity exists for. Christianity exists for the sole purpose of making believers become more like Christ, perfecting them all the time and turning them into images of Christ himself. According to Lewis, this is all that matters, not the Theology, doctrine, and denomination that many religious groups in the world today attempt to force onto people or convert them to the way that this religion or that denomination teaches. Sometimes the Theology and doctrine is what turns people away from Christianity. However, he also explains that although it isn’t the main purpose of Christianity, doctrines and Theology are important in understanding God and reaching the main goal of Christianity.

First of all you need to know what the terms Theology, doctrine, and denomination are, and how they fit together. Theology and doctrine are two very similar terms that go hand in hand. Theology literally means “The study of God” from the Greek words “Theo” and “Logos”. Doctrine is what individuals get out of their

If the only thing that matters in Christianity is becoming like Christ and bringing more people to Him, then why should anybody be concerned about Theology anyway? Part of that was answered in the previous paragraph, but Lewis helps to explain further when he writes, “The whole purpose for which we exist is to be thus taken into the life of God. Wrong ideas about what life is will make it harder”. It is more important that a Christian studies Theology today than it was centuries ago, because people back then were less educated and didn’t read as much as we do today. Now everyone is expected to know what he or she believes. Just look at some of the major religions such as Muslims, Jehovah Witnesses, and many other religious groups who seem to be more dedicated and know more about what they believe than many Christians do. Christians need to be able to understand their history and beliefs so that they can effectively share it with others and lead more people to Christ.

Now the question is “How do we learn more about God and Theology”? It would be quite difficult to learn it all just from the Bible, although it is a good source. Actually one of the best resources for becoming better educated about Theology is through other Christians, either in study groups, churches, or books written by Christian Theologians. Lewis affirms this when he says, “Consequently, the one really adequate instrument for learning about God is
