Crime and technology

When entering the new millennium mankind and society seemed more focused on environmental, sociological and financial problems than on a terrorist attack as demonstrated with the events of September 11. The twentieth-century society was strongly influenced by the shock of the introduction of new inventions. Communication, the media, cinema and television caused global events to become the concern of all the world's population. In the remotest parts of the globe people know of life in modern societies, be it in a distorted manner through cardboard figures of television soap operas. But as time changes, the array of crimes and criminals also change. Criminal justice professionals will encounter enormous challenges while experiencing marked changes in the future.

Explosive growth in the computer industry over the last decade has made new technologies cheaper and simpler for the average person to own. As a result, computers play an intricate part in our daily lives. The areas in which computers affect life are infinite, ranging from entertainment to finances.


Increasingly, criminals are raiding corporate servers, electronically transferring intellectual property, or harassing employees via e-mail. They are using PCs and Macs to commit felonies such as embezzlement, drug trafficking, money laundering, or distributing child pornography and they are seizing valuable assets. This is crime in the twenty-first century. Never was this a problem in the twentieth-century when crime was defined as physically stealing something or physically hurting someone. Now with a click of a mouse a person can due more harm than ever. With the growth and sophistication of internet and computer internet crime, the twenty-first century is bound to be filled with high profile computer crimes. And with technology rapidly increasing, authorities seem to be one step behind criminals in all cases.

If anything were to happen to these precious devices, the world would be chaotic.

Yes we will we still have our common everyday crimes such as robbery, assault, stealing, vehicle theft, murder, etc. but today’s criminals are educating them
