Justification of American Revolution

The purpose of this paper is to prove that America’s revolution from Great Britain’s control was justified by Britain’s poor treatment and handling of it’s American colonies. The colonies were managed in an unfair, cruel, and selfish manner. For the times this kind of governing was not taboo or even uncommon among Britain or any world power. Mercantilism, the driving force of the era, declared that any country with power had a sizeable number of colonies which it drew resources cheaply from and used to gain more, better colonies constantly attempting to outdo and overpower its rivals.

“ it will deprive us of all our invaluable charter rights and privileges, drain us suddenly of our cash, occasion an entire stagnation of trade, discourage every kind of industry, and involve us in the most abject slavery” Such a creed failed to take into account, however, the disposition, power, and opinions of said colonies. As they were used, d


rained, and milked for every last penny their mother country could squeeze out of them, the colonists began to feel, betrayed, isolated, and even scornful toward their previous homeland. Yet the government did nothing decisive to prevent or avert this train chugging down the path to war because they felt it a waste of time, manpower, and money. The largest empire in the world did have more important things to worry about besides a lowly colony’s pathetic crying.

“No Government could function if resistance were legitimate when states were not administered ‘in the best manner possible’ or even when they were ‘very ill managed.’ Such a principle would ‘throw all things into confusion and anarchy.’
