As a teacher, I will work to change the world through my actions, my students, and all those who observe what we will create together. Each of us who inhales the breath of this planet is a teacher in the truest sense of the word, as each of us contributes to the growth of humanity and the formation of the history. Those who choose to pursue the vocation of teaching take this responsibility to the next level in realizing that the future is in the hands of our children, and that in order to achieve peace and justice in the years to come we must teach the youth how to seek it now.
That's what came into my mind immediately after I saw the video presented by Mrs. Bush throwing light upon the American methods of teaching. The idea conveyed by the ex first lady got home to me and acquired the following interpretation: Teachers are touching, influencing, and shaping the future daily through their interactions with their classes. A teacher's role is to take the knowledge they have gained from life and present it in an unbiased fashion, with an open mind, while encouraging questions and investigations from their students. This knowledge should not be only what they have learned from their schooling, but also those experiences that have shaped their mind and heart throughout the years. In American schools most of the activities are done with the hands-on attitude meaning that the involvement into you can do it and do it yourself assignments is the number one priority.
The video made me ponder more over the issue and go further. I found a wonderful selection of quotations belonging to our American colleagues which reflects their urge to teach for the sake of the joy the process brings into their lives.
