Rape Is It Being Taken As Seriously As It Should

What is rape? Rape, regardless of who commits it, is a felony of sexual assault that leaves the victim injured and traumatized. Rape is a misleading term which describes a serious crime. Also is misunderstood and under reported. Rape is the common cause of dieases, physical and emotional injuries, and unwanted pregnancies.

Sexual assualt is an act of power and control and is not related to “sexual urge”. All forms of sexual assault are crimes including: verbal, visual, audio, and force. Over 683,000 women are raped per year (National Woman’s). 3% of rape cases have injures requiring over-night hospitalization (“Rape Fact Sheet”). That is 3 % too much. Out of all the victims of rape, 91% were female and 9% were male (National Woman’s). If the victim was drinking alcohol or taking drugs at the time of the attack, sexual assault is still a crime (“Sexual Assualt”).

Some people, mostly teens, take rape as a joke. And usually, they’re the ones who been raped or sexually assulted the most. Out of all the women who reported being raped, 54% were under the age of 18 (National Woman’s).

In a survey of 11- 14 year olds, 51% of boys and 41% of the girls said forced sex is acceptable if the boy spe

nt “a lot of money” on the girl. 31% of the boys and 32% of the girls believe that it is acceptable for a man to rape a woman with sexual experience. 87% of the boys and 79% of the girls believe rape is acceptable if the couple is married. 65% of the boys and 47% of the girls believe rape is acceptable after 6 months of dating (“Facts About Sexual Assault”).

Some people are not as lucky. If luck doesn’t come your way, you might end up having a disease that does not come with a cure. Some of these diseases include Genital Herpes, which cause blisters on sex organs, and AIDS, which breaks down the body’s defences against other infections. This HIV virus is most likely to cause death (“Medical and Health”).

If your lucky, the disease you might get can be treated. Some examples of this disease are Trichomonas, bacteria that can be spread into your fallopian tubes and cause pain; Chlamydia, bacteria that can cause painful infections that lead to infertility; and Gonorrhoea, which causes abdominal pain and vaginal discharges. Luckely, these diseases can be cured with antibiotics (“Medical and Health”).

Pregnancy rate associated with rape is estimated to be 4.7%. There are more than 32,101 rape related pregnancies among American women over the age of 18.

Out of 6,159 college students at 32 institutes in the U.S., 54% of the women are victims of rape, 57% of the assualts occurred on dates, 55% had used alcohol or other drugs, 25% of the men admitted to some degree of sexually aggressive behavior, and 42% told no one. 13.3% of college women say they were forced to have sex in a dating situtation (“Facts About Sexual Assault”).
