The Book Of Job

1

The Book of Job is the eighteenth book in the Old Testament. It is the first book in the poetic and wisdom writings. It is the story of Job and the struggles he had. With conviction and grit he handled all that happened with faith in God.

Authorship:

In researching who the author is I have only found conjecture. It is believed that Job may have been the author or some one that was very close to see and hear all that went on. The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia concludes “It seems to me much better to regard a story so homogeneous and interrelated as in the main the composition of one mind than to distribute it, as some critics do, among various authors, supplementers, and editors.” There are references to an eyewitness account (Job 12:17-25) by this it is assumed that some one had to be there to write about it. The Easton Dictionary, expands the possible author/author’s with this statement “Others argue that it was written by Job himself, or by Elihu, or Isaiah, or perhaps more probabl

With out knowing the author/author’s it is hard to know where it was written. The only mention of a date that I found was in the NIV study bible. The have two dates of possible authorship. “The date of the man Job and his historical settings and the date of the inspired writer who composed the book”. The dates they give are: The first date being between the reign of King Solomon to the exile. (2000BC to 1000 BC) most likely late in the second millennium, the second could have been written any time. The NIV study bible concludes that the only probable date is the first one as we know that Job lived 100 years (42:16) and his wealth was me measured in cattle. The use of iron was not until the 12 century in the near east. This would indicate the author’s interpretation into the text. This is the only date that was suggested. With no real set author it is hard to put a date to when it was written.

With all that is unknown about Job the one thing that is known is his faith and unwavering trust in God. This is a great story of one man’s trial and suffering and how he deals with all that has happened to him. Although his friends try to reason with him and shake his beliefs he stood stead fast. It is a story that never is out dated or loses its meaning. The “Exploring the Old Testament” book explains the unseen spiritual that was going on in the back ground and how it is impossible to understand what is really going on in people’s lives. Recognizing the limitations of human wisdom and understanding of God’s ways us as Christians can learn a lot from Job in how we deal with daily life, No where in the bible do we such a story as this. Job has been set apart for a reason. To show all men what could happen to any one and how to truly have
