Along the same lines as rank comes Customs and Courtesies. They are another significant difference between the civilian life and military life. Most people are familiar with some military customs. One obvious one is the uniform. Each uniform differs between services. And in each service there are numerous rules on how each uniform is to look. For example, in the Air Force, there are certain places on the uniform where decorations must be placed, and the times in wearing certain uniforms differs depending on the occasion. Other customs are wearing a hat or “cover” when going outdoors or saluting personnel higher in rank. There are no concrete rules for customs in the military. Most of them are passed down orally, and it is required that everyone memorizes them. The courtesies are less noticeable than the customs. Like customs, there are numerous rules involving courtesies. All courtesies are based on the mutual respect between those of different rank. One example of this is that it is vital to greet someone with higher rank with a “good morning sir/ma’am.” Without the customs and courtesies in the military, there would not be any guidelines of neatness and professionalism. And that is a huge focus in military life, always keeping military professionalism.
