Puritan Society was started because they wanted to leave the turmoil in England and also to purifying it from the Catholic way of living. The Salem Covenant of 1629 was clear stated for everyone to see. The covenant bound the Puritans to God where then God would show himself in the “blessed word of truth” (Salem Covenants). What this means is that by reading and learning the scriptures in depth and obeying the laws commended to them in the bible they would be well on their way to salvation from the early sin committed by Adam. One very interesting Law in Massachusetts was a sumptuary law. The law stated that no “person within the jurisdiction” should not exceed £200 or wear any gold or silver buttons (Mass. 1651). These laws were practiced because they didn’t want to shame God. They were to prevent people from looking too extravagant in public and if they were to wear something like that out in public, they would be fined. Dishonoring God with too much jewelry was a sin and forbidden by their government. Puritans were kept to simple styles of clothing. That law also states that an officer, or magistrate and their wives and children may wear such attire if and when it is at their own discretion (Mass. 1651). These were typical laws carried out by the Puritans in those days. Limiting their people to certain types of clothing in somewhat of a social order. The covenant also states that people with higher education beyond what is required, wearing extravagant clothing would be permissible (Mass. 1651).

As far as Puritans and Puritanism are concerned, they were a set of people that were true believers in their cause to be saved and not be doomed because of the early sin of Adam. God played the primary role in their lives for everything. Their society, their marriage and their relationship to God and their children were one of true passion. Many of their laws and beliefs in marriage and their society as a whole resemble that of our own. Their drive and determination to pursue the liberty of their souls took up most of their lives making them some very interesting people to study. Even though they had many laws to follow, their intentions were never bad. They were paranoid in a sense that they watched over everyone and almost spied their neighbors to make sure they were never shaming God or their community. The Puritan religion was always pushing people to be the best people they could be in every day life. Although many people were not visible saints or the chosen ones, the Puritans did anything in their power to obey God’s laws to become that civil man everyone

Moving on to the relationship between husband and wife, when a man and a woman got married, they expressed their vows orally never having a written copy of the marriage covenant (Morgan 30). When compared to before in the Puritan way of marriage, society today would have a legal contract binding both man and woman acting as a covenant, a promise, to your partner. The celebration of the wedding wasn’t flashy at all
