Candide

The story of Candide brings up many comparisons when it comes to real life. It also is very symbolic when it comes to comparing the Garden of Eden to life in general. Voltaire tries to prove a point that growing vegetables is the same as retreating to the Garden of Eden. I think that Voltaire is trying to duplicate the overall idea of the Garden of Eden. I think that he feels if he can “match it or at least carry through the same type of idea, that just maybe things will turn around for everyone. With this belief I would have to agree with Pangloss. Martin has a good argument that Voltaire is just trying to make life bearable and worth living, but there are similarities between the vegetable garden and the Garden of Eden. Martin is saying that Voltaire just wants to make life better for everyone, including himself and he probably is trying to make life better, but Voltaire wants something bigger and that is to duplicate the Garden of Eden. I also think that there is a part of Voltaire that wants to make his vegetable garden better than the Garden of Eden and will go to great lengths to achieve this goal of his that he has set.

I think Voltaire is trying to give the reader a realistic answer. Realistically though, a reader

The retreat to the garden could be a solution to the problems, but again it depends on how one looks at the situation. Some individuals like to run from their problems and those individuals love the idea of going to the garden. Other individuals don’t like to give up without a fight and look at the garden as running away from the problems going on. It comes down to the fact individuals are going to believe what they want to believe and the only person who can change anyone’s mind is the individual’s themselves. Finally with enlightenment playing such a huge part of this story, the reader must keep in mind that the more one believes in anything, the better that event or thing is going to look. If the reader

has to think about the chances of an individual taking something out of the Bible and duplicating it closely. Very powerful forces built the Garden of Eden and Voltaire is just another plain individual in my eyes. It is just very hard to get excited over something that seems so far fetched. Voltaire has really nothing on his side to show that he has any type of chance to make his vegetable garden comparable to Garden of Eden. I am not questioning his effort, but sometimes reality doesn’t allow for such goals to be met, especially when dealing with the Bible. A lot of individuals are going to need evidence Voltaire is on his way to having his vegetable garden similar to Garden of Eden. He has yet to show any real proof about this.

Reason and evidence play a huge part in life. Reason has to do wit
