The Perspective of Sidney A. Ribeau

In “How I Came to Know ‘In Self Realization There Is Truth’”, Sidney A. Ribeau addresses the struggle of growing up in a society that marginalizes the uniqueness of the many diverse cultures in our country. He discusses education, and how the very structure of learning in schools today centers around the dominant culture and its history, literary works and rhetoric patterns. He shares his struggles to not only find his own literary voice through his ethnic identity, but also to make his voice heard and his observations revealed. Finally, Ribeau also encourages and inspires people of color to speak out about their experiences and strive to support the growth of today’s curriculum.

Ribeau first discusses his connectedness with the authors Michelle Cliff and Terry McMillan, and how it made him remember what it was like when he was pursuing his education at a graduate level. He sites a couple excerpts in which Cliff writes about how in order to succeed she had to step back from her true ethnic self, and write from the dominant perspective. He identifies with McMillan writing about how amazing it felt to identify for the first time with other authors of color. Ribeau had also felt that desire to read and learn about e

Michelle will not deny her privileges now. She continues to study about other cultures and has persisted in deconstructing her own Eurocentric surroundings and sometimes Eurocentric views. Michelle encourages respect and admiration of variety in American culture and preaches about the inequality of civil rights. She recognizes the need for improvement and better understanding on her part, but Michelle has also come to a realization of her “self” and the truth.

Yuisa’s mother is a high school ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher in Hartford, CT. Yuisa took Michelle to her mother’s school to meet the students and take a look around. Michelle was in awe of the differences between the school she saw and the school she grew up in. There was a big fence around the school yard with barbed wire on top. The sidewalks were dirty and cracked. And the inside of the school wasn’t that much better with locks on everything and security guards. Michelle did not feel safe in this environment, and couldn’t imagine trying to learn in such conditions. After questioning Yuisa about the demographics of the school, Michelle began to realize how much she is at an advantage and why.

Throughout the next few years Michelle’s roommate, Yuisa, taught her about being in the minority. She was patient with Michelle’s ignorance, but firm in her beliefs on Eurocentric America. Michelle asked questions about Yuisa’s family life because she could not understand the control Yuisa’s father seemed to have over Yuisa’s life. She marveled at Yuisa’s acceptance of her body shape. She even spent a week with Yuisa’s family that speaks Spanish at home. That was when she gained a respect for one culture and a desire to learn about many others that were different from her own. That was also when Michelle began to recognize the privileges she was granted.

xperiences and histories similar to his own. It was then that he perceived the lack of intercultural study in core classes. He noticed that although this country claims to be made up of diversity, the education he was receiving, along with everyone else studying communication, was Eurocentric. Ribeau began questioning why his cultural perspective was left out.

When filling out her “Request for a Roommate” form before her first year in college, Michelle filled out the form with the intention of getting paired with a Black girl, answering the questions with what she thought a Black girl might say too. To her disappointment, she ended up with a spoiled, white girl from Virginia Beach and a Puerto Rican girl from Connecticut. She was disappointed at first because, until that year, she had not recognized, experienced or been taught about the cultural differences of Puerto Rican
