Religious Tolerance

Over the last decade, the focal point of the communal tension in India has been the site of the disputed Babari Masjid in Ayodhya. Where thousands of Hindu activists razed the 16th-century mosque, sparking nationwide riots between Hindus and Muslims that killed more than 2,000 people.

A series of 12 bomb blasts rock Mumbai city, allegedly masterminded by the Dawood Ibrahim gang. This was supposedly in retaliation for the 1992 post-Babri riots.

58 people,on a pilgrimage organised by the VHP, died in Godhra when a carriage on the Sabarmati Express train was surrounded by Muslim inhabitants was soaked in a flammable substance and caught fire

In retaliation for the previous day's violence, Hindu rioters set fire to about fifty buildings, mostly Muslim-owned, in Ahmedabad, killing more than 60 Muslims. Curfews are ordered in thirty towns in Gujarat.

28 people die in continuing violence in Ahmedabad. Police shoot and kill five while attempting to control rioters.

Two powerful bomb blasts rock Mumbai again leaving more than 50 people dead. These attacks were believed to have been carried out by Muslims.

Ever since the time when communal violence started in the British era it has been politicians and those in power who try to manipulate the people using local religious leaders to their own ends.

In spite of being a secular democracy with generally peaceful co-existence amongst its diverse ethnic and religious communities, India has witnessed occasional bouts of large-scale violence sparked by underlying tensions between sections of its majority Hindu and minority Muslim communities.

India could not free itself of curse of communalism even more than fifty years after independence. If anything it has been getting worse year after year. There has been not a single year in post-independence period, which has been free of communal violence though number of incidents may vary.

What differs among various religions however is the latter part, the practical part of it this is unique to each religion as it is a product of the time of the founding of that particular religion and the economic as well as the social conditions prevalent at that time.

The biggest problem is that there is a lack of awareness among the people about other religions. This leaves the pundits and the imams to present the followers of the other religions in whatevever way that suits them for their political or personal gain. This is one factor coupled with the fact that there is a very low level of education and literacy in the country makes the problem even more severe. As has been seen in every general election that takes place, votes are given on the basis of religion, cast, and community as well as money and muscle power. All the wrong reasons to do so.
