Personality Traits Revealed By Salad Dressing Use

According to the Myers-Briggs personality classifications, people are categorized as having either an introverted or extroverted personality. Introverts are the individuals who get their stimulation internally and are generally solitary and shy whereas extroverts seek outside sources for stimulation and therefore are more sociable (Kosslyn 351). In recent studies, the way that people use salad dressing is linked to certain characteristics that would distinguish a person as being either introverted or extroverted. In order to make assumptions about a person’s personality type from the way he or she uses salad dressing, one must be grouped into categories. There are three different styles of salad dressing use: “dippers,” “toppers,” and “mixers” (“Salad Dressing Style Reveals Personality Traits” par. 2-3). Our results linked dippers with extroverts and toppers with introverts. Most of the people polled identified themselves as mixers and since there were similar percentages of mixers among introverts and extroverts, we have concluded that they fall somewhere in between and have certain characteristics of both introverted and extroverted personalities. This claim is further supported by Debra L. Johnson, an assistant research scientist in psychology at the University of Iowa, as she made the following statement after a study done at the university on personality traits: “Extremely introverted and extroverted personalities are two ends of a continuum, with most people falling somewhere in between” (Introverts Front Extroverts Rear” par. 2).
