File sharing may not have changed music in general but it definitely is the technological breakthrough that forever changed the way we listen to music. With hundreds of millions of downloads available on the Internet in high quality sound, fairly small file sizes, and all for free? One would ask why wouldn’t you download. So with millions downloading, basically any song that has ever been released including that long lost live Beatles track or the B-Side to an old Elvis record, we are obviously going to see a drop in record sales. The most popular sources today to get downloaded material from is P2P (peer to peer) software developers Kazzaa and Morpheous. But about 7 to ten years ago when downloading began this wasn’t the case. The days of going to a certain website and pressing links of the songs you would like to download and waiting hours to download them over a dial up connection are gone. This is the first major way that downloading has changed music! Record sales are plummeting dropped as much as 18% in the last few years. More and more people are choosing to have th
e songs for free in the comfort of their own home rather then have to leave their homes, drive to the mall, go in the busy mall, search forever to find the album you want just to find that it is not in stock. Convenience. I believe this is a huge factor why downloading is so wildly popular. Someone can hear a song on radio or TV, decide they like it go to their computer and have it downloaded in about 2 minutes time and can listen to it over and over again in high quality, skip free sound. They can even have it burned onto a cd to listen in their car within 5 minutes. The fact is you can’t get out of your house in 5 minutes let alone be at the mall shopping. So yes I believe Convenience is a major reason downloading is so popular. So in conclusion, whether you believe in downloads or you don’t they are here to stay. So in my opinion I say embrace the technology find a way that is suits you and use it to its full potential. This is something the record labels should have done 10 years ago when this whole download revolution started. Another major way file sharing and
