Mike Tyson
Mike Tyson was born during a time period of racism and poverty. Born in Brooklyn, many like to say that on June 30, 1966, a champion was born. Tyson was born into a family of four. His mother, Lorna, was well into her second marriage. Tyson’s father Jimmy Kirkpatrick, had also had two other children prior to Mike. Rodney was the oldest and then there was Denise. While pregnant with Mike, Lorna’s husband left her in Brooklyn with three children to raise on her own. Lorna began to drink regularly and eventually wound up on welfare. When the heating bill could not be paid the family slept in their clothes many nights. Mike had to put cardboard in his shoes to cover the holes. They lived day to day speculating when their next meal would be. Most of the time it consisted of flour and water. All three children suffered but it seemed the youngest boy suffered the most. “Big Head Mike” as the neighbors dubbed him, was harassed and ridiculed for every oddity of appearance and character. He was beaten by other children for everything from his lisp to his worn out shoes. By age nine Tyson began to keep pigeons in a coop on the roof of his apartment building. Other kids would steal his pigeons and he would
After the knockout heard around the world, Tyson went on to dominate other opponents. Two years later trouble found Tyson again. Mike Tyson was indicted for rape. The charges were handed down by an Indianapolis grand jury and included two counts of criminal deviant conduct and one count of confinement. This stemmed from his alleged sexual assault on an eighteen year old beauty queen whom Tyson had met the night before. He was sentenced to a six year prison term of which he only served three. After Mike got out of the camp Stewart recommended a boxing school to him. It was in informal boxing camp for boys like Tyson. Cus D’Amato was the man that ran the facility. He was tough but knew boxing well. For a kid like Tyson it was a halfway house back into society. Stewart drove Tyson down to the school and introduced him to D’Amato. Tyson and Stewart put on a demonstration for him. Tyson did well against Stewart and even tossed him around a bit. D’Amato had seen enough. He pulled Stewart aside and said “That’s the heavyweight champion of the world”. He went on to defend his title successfully in nine matches over a period of only two years. He was undefeated at 37-0 going into another supposed sure win. On February 11, 1990 he was scheduled to face James “Buster” Douglas. Tyson was arrogant as ever, but who wouldn’t be at 37-0 with 33 knockouts. People watched in amazement as the young champion struggled against a virtual nobody in the boxing scene. As the match entered the tenth round, history was recorded yet again. However it was not in the favor of the champ. James “Buster” Douglas crushed Tyson into the ground knocking his mouth piece from his mouth. The count began and Tyson was shaken. As he scampered to find his mouth piece the ref reached the end of his ten count. It was over. The unthinkable happened, “Iron” Mike was knocked out and notched his first loss. Only a year later Tyson would get his first title shot against Trevor Berbick. On this day, November 22, 1986, history would be made. “Iron” Mike Tyson, at the age of nineteen, knocked out the world heavyweight champion only seconds into the second round. Tyson was the youngest person to ever win the title. Five Years later Tyson had his first professional debut. He had to fight a club fighter named Hector Mercedes. As expected the fight did not turn much profit, however Tyson knocked Mercedes out in the first round. In another fight that la
