Arthurian Legends and Their Place in Modern Society


            Heroes can come in many ways, shapes, and forms. However, all heroes have some common factors. The Arthurian legends take place in Britain during the medieval times. The medieval times was a period of time intervening between the decline of the Roman Empire and the revival of letters. From these times of despair emerged heroes who served as saviors to the public in a time of uncertainty. Even though we have long surpassed the Middle Ages, the Arthurian legends still remain relevant to modern society because of the morals, traditions, and themes.
             Morals are person's main beliefs or philosophies on the appropriate ways of reacting to situations encounters in day-to-day living. In the short story "Arthur Becomes King" written by T. H. White, Arthur's is able to lift the sword in the stone. He then delivers the sword to Sir Ector whom immediately claims that he pulled out the sword. Sir Ector says, "Do you remember that sword which the King of England would pull out? Well here it is. I have it. I pulled it out." Eventually others become spectacle and he admits to Arthur having pulled out the sword. Lying is and other deceitful acts are corrupting our modern society. These Arthurian legends help to promote honesty and sincerity in a society that does not always uphold these or other worthy characteristics.
             Traditions, a big part in the Arthurian legends, are customs or beliefs that have been upheld for many generations. a. Even though our modern society is evolving and constantly changing to accommodate our lifestyles we still follow some traditions in order to preserve and maintain who we are, and where we came from. In "Morte d"Arthur" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Arthur the one who pulled the sword from the stone has a tragic downfall. Near the end of the story as he is dying Arthur says "The old order changeth, yielding place to the new." Arthur is proclaiming that his tradition has ended to make way for a new and brighter one.
