To Kill a Mockingbird

“To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee

“To Kill a Mockingbird” is a fictional story set in a small Southern town, Maycomb, in the early 1930. The story is told through the life of a little girl, Scout Finch, and her relationship with the main characters her brother, Jem, father, Atticus, friend, Dill housekeeper, Calpurnia, and her dealings with the township people and events that happen in her town. It highlights racism, prejudice, injustice, socioeconomic status, ignorance and tolerance.

In the 1930, actual events that were happening in the country included the Great Depression. The Great Depression was the combination of the unequal distribution of wealth throughout the 1920's, and the stock market speculation that took place during the latter part that same decade. The unequal distribution of wealth created an unstable economy. The excessive speculation in the stock market eventually lead to large market crashes. These market crashes, combined with the unequal distribution of wealth, caused the Great Depression.

A theme that is affecting the United States today was also a predictor of the Great Depression. The disappearance of the middle class is a predictor of market instability. For

Another case that garnered international attention in June of 1998 was the horribly brutal murder of James Byrd, Jr., 49, of Jasper, Texas. His crime was that as he was walking home he spoke to three white men. They beat him, slit his throat, chained them to the pack of their truck and dragged him for miles. Two of the men were members in hate-clubs or white supremacist groups and all three had served time in jail for other violations. Although, unlike Tom Robins, the killers were all sent to jail it was a sad commentary on where as a society we were and we are as we enter the millennium.

The court trial is a major plot crescendo in the book. Prior to the actual courtroom, Scout and Jem hear many nasty, narrow-minded comments from their schoolmates, neighbors and even family members. Even people and children who occupy lower rungs on the socioeconomic rungs are happy now to look down their noses or say nasty things to them because Atticus was selected to defend Tom Robins and, astoundingly, planed to put all his efforts into giving Tom a fair trial.
