Valedictorian Address
Ladies and Gentlemen, take a look at the young men and women sitting before you. Graduates, look at one another. Never before have we seen this group so neatly and uniformly dressed. Ordinarily you’ll find us wearing blue jeans, t-shirts, sports uniforms, designer outfits and thrift store clothes. Once or twice, we’ve worn prom dresses, tuxedos and even dressed in all blue for game days. You never could tell what this group might look like on any given day. Now, I’d like you take another look at the Class of 2001; this time a really, really close look. Do you notice anything special? We proudly represent Antioch High School, the most racially diverse high school in Middle Tennessee. We speak 23 different languages. Fifteen percent of our student population comes from international families. We are a kaleidoscope of skin tones and a rainbow of personalities. We are blessed to have gained the experience of being educated in such a diverse community because we live in an increa
Olive Wendell Holmes said, “A person’s mind once stretched by a new idea never regains its original dimensions.” Our minds have certainly been stretched and shaped by our experiences at Antioch High through academics, clubs, sports, and recreation but mostly through interacting, relating, and working together. Sure we have recognizable accomplishments such as earning over half a million dollars in scholarships, winning district championships in sports, a state appearance in basketball all while placing in math contests and donating considerable hours of community service. These things are great, but I believe our greatest accomplishments are yet to come. Class of 2001, in addition to being the first class of the new millenium, we are the first class to attend four years in the new high school building. We can be the first generation to see a nation and a world be without racial bigotry, gender bias, age discrimination and religious intolerance. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “I
