Talking in whispers

Talking in Whispers

"Talking in Whispers" is a book by James Watson and it shows how the military Junta violates the basic human rights of the people in Chile to maintain power.

The book is mainly about the people in Chile doing the best they can to try and stop the junta. The events of the book happen in just one week it shows how much can happen in such a short period of time.

The main characters are Andres Laretta, Isa and Beto, who are twins, and the military Junta of Chile. Also there is Andres father who is a main character the whole way through the book, but you could say it is just his spirit, because he was captured at the beginning of the story by the military junta on Andres first appearance. Andres father was a singer in a band, the Los Obstinados, one of the band members, Horacio, was shot whilst driving and the other member, Braulio was also captured. Andres father and band were targeted as many of their songs are insulting the junta and talking of how Chileans want their freedom.

Andres meets Isa and Beto as he is walking to Santiago after his father was captured, they stop and give him a lift. When they arrive in Santiago they receive news that Miguel Albert

Andres is also captured during this book he is electrocuted, beaten until he passed out then put into a pile of either dead or dying people assuming that he would die soon too. This is a horrific violation of human rights because they sur pressed his freedom of speech, he was physically and mentally tortured and unable to help himself plus he could have died. Whilst Andres is in the House of Laughter Isa meets up with a reporter from America who is looking for Don Chailey. When he finds out what had happened to Don Chailey he then agrees to publish the photos.

During one chapter of the book Andres meets an American photographer, Don Chailey, whilst he was taking photos, the black berets capture him but just before he is beaten he manages to give his camera to Andres who then takes it back to where he is staying. Isa, Beto and Andres then find out a way to get the photos developed, they show who murdered Miguel Alberti, what the military Junta were doing to the people in Chile e.g. battering them putting them into cells and taking them to the house of laughter ( a torture house controlled by the military junta ). This is more than enough evidence for the people of Chile to get the Military Junta arrested and taken away from Chile.
