The law is unenforceable and ineffective. Eighteen-year-olds are able to take part in all other government regulated events, and using Europe as an example, we should lower the drinking age. A lower drinking age is in called for in today’s society. For about 20 years now, the drinking age has been 21-years-old, due to the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984. Yet the law is essentially unenforceable and ineffective. These laws do a fine job of keeping young people out of clubs and bars, but do nothing to prevent them from obtaining alcohol from other places; a sibling, friend, or a party for example. A lower drinking age is needed in today’s society. After all, when a person turns eighteen they are given numerous rights, and the law doesn’t do much to prevent them form drinking anyhow, and European countries have shown success in a lower drinking age. It only seems to make sense to lower the minimum age. It would indeed take many years to acclimate to the lower drinking age, and there would be binge drinking. But in the long run, it would solve many problems in our society today. There are problems related to drinking among all groups of people, not only those who are under the legal age and it is wrong to discriminate against them. We as a nation need to review our ideas about drinking and consider whether we want responsible educated drinkers or reckless unaware children.

In the Between Worlds Reader there are numerous examples of the people trying to control masses. As stated, this does not help. In “Generation Weird”, by Helen Cordes, she talks about restraining children form drinking coke. Typically, the children will not listen and will only drink it more. The prohibition of the 1920’s was evidence enough that over control creates more problems then it solves. Drink
