Social work term paper
This is a term paper on how a social worker is used within several types of schools. Social Work is classified under the topic of Social Welfare. Social Welfare are various institutions and services whose primary purpose is to maintain and enhance the physical, social, intellectual, or emotional well being of people. This includes the university, government, or private programs that cover a variety of objectives in the broad areas of social services. Social Work is defined as a professional discipline within the framework of social welfare programs and services. These programs are designed to assist in enhancing the quality of their lives and social relationships. The history of how social work in schools was started is quite interesting. The field of social work was started in or about 1906-1907. At this time in history, there was a strong need for some type of specialized help to be offered to the student population. The first social workers in the school setting were financed by the community agencies that were derived from the burgeoning conviction that the public school was the logical place for early intervention. Then in 1914, in Rochester N.Y., was the first known city to start a prog
I then went to one of my local districts elementary school. I went to Gardiner Manor Elementary School in Bay Shore. When I first arrived at the school, I noticed that it was a lot different from the first interview I had done. I went up to the front of the school and from the outside it was like Fort Knox, in relationship that every door of the school was locked and you as a visitor could only enter the school through the door by the main office. I then looked up and saw that they have video surveillance besides all the doors being locked. I finally was allowed into the building, but had to wait in the main office lobby because the school social worker was in with a student and the principal trying to resolve an emergency issue. I waited for about 15-20 minutes, and then I got to go in and interview the school social worker. I sat down with her in her office and introduced myself to her and explained to her the reason why I was there. She then let me proceed with the interview. I interviewed Mrs. Linda Schiavone from the Gardiner Manor Elementary School in Bay Shore NY. She told me that she is a happily married woman, and enjoys her husband’s companionship. The couple has 5 children together and they reside in Bay Shore, Long Island. Mrs. Schiavone told me that her exact job title is a school social worker at he Gardiner Manor Elementary School in Bay Shore NY. She told me that she like Mrs. Stills/Johnson is a social worker with her CSW, which means that she is a Certified Social Worker. She attended college at SUNY Stony Brook under the social worker degree program, and then she attended graduate school at SUNY Stony Brook as well. I then discussed with Mrs. Schiavone where she did her internship. She told me that she did her internship at in many places but the ones that she remembers most are a local high school, a local middle school, and two different elementary schools. She then told me that it was mainly her daughter that made her decide on becoming a social worker. Her daughter is someone that has special needs and needed a lot of help in school. Her daughter was put into special education at a very young age. As being a parent of a special education student, she saw at first hand how special education was done. She told me that both she and her daughter had a good relationship with her social worker and saw how well this social worker worked with her daughter. This social worker was like an advocate for both her and her daughter, and she one day wanted to be just like this woman. At Gardiner Manor Elementary School, Mrs. Schiavone has many responsibilities. She mainly does everything for the students. She is there to counsel the students in both private and group sessions, she teaches programs of intervention to the teachers and student teachers, she runs a detention program, and she also guides teachers on how to handle certain situations within and outside the classroom. Mrs. Schiavone also interacts with the students at Gardiner Manor Elementary by engaging them with techniques and strategies to encourage the students to work to their full potential. Mrs. Schiavone also offers a couple of services, and they are number one to help the student understand the consequences of their actions in a certain situation, and number two to discuss their consequences of their actions and offer the student alternative forms of intervention to help them. It seems that all the bad situations are always brought to Mrs. Schiavone attention. Some examples of the bad situations are when there was a crisis pertaining to a child that is from a single parent family, or when a parent of one of the student’s suddenly gets severely injured or even dies, she serves as a bereavement counselor with a bereavement program. Mrs. Schiavone also offers several types of counseling and they include emotional counseling, motivational counseling, behavior modification counseling, and MOST ALWAYS cognitive counseling
