Comparison and Contrast of Korean Shamanism and Mantras

Mantras take varied forms and are used in many contexts, purposes, and emotions.

The word mantra comes from a root, which means “that which protects the mind.” It aims not only to achieve some specific end, but through the process of integration of the body, mind, and spirit, the very evolution of man into a well being. Priests of Hinduism, recite mantras, which are previously set chants to be in contact with a particular god. Another religion that originated from Asia and employs the use of verbal devotion is Shamanism. Surviving many millenniums, Shamanism is the oldest folk belief of the Korean people. The principles that underlay Shamanism are that every natural object in the world has a soul. In the view of Korean Shamanism, human beings come into the world as integral parts of the rhythm of nature. Korean shamans practice their way of communication to the deities by narrative and lyrical songs. The magical power of songs is all too well known as a universal element in most shaman rituals. While mantras and shaman songs may appear unalike, they are comparable because they are both rituals and sacred acts.

Mantras have been associated with special “words” (noises, sounds) that have no meaning in ordinary language. This strongly suggests that some mantras, or all mantras in some sense, are abracadabra words. It is further the case that there is no apparent correlation between the context or use of a mantra and its being, in part, linguistically meaningful. On the other hand, the texts within the Shamanistic songs both narrative and lyrical contain real words that have meaning in language. This is because Korean

shaman songs, particularly the narrative songs, must be understood by the audience to which it is being performed. The narrative song often explains the origin of the various gods. It is crucial that the audience understands the shaman who is performing the song, because the shaman is the sole method of communication to and from the gods. This creates a sense of identification out of genuine respect for the gods and conformity among the people. As a result, the people create a sense of community with each other.

Mantras and Korean shaman songs are both a highly stylized and formal way of asking for something from the gods. In both religions, man is subordinating himself to a higher power and the method of communication is chant or song. Mantras and Korean shaman songs are sacred acts that have been carried through many years of tradition.
