Dante Rossetti Biography

Born May 12, 1828 in London to a controversial Dante scholar, Dante Gabriel Rossetti was destined to be involved in the arts. His family was well noted. His father, Gabriele was known over Europe for his exploits as a scholar, and for his status as political exile from Italy. His mother, Frances was of Italian and English lineage, and was a good deal younger than his father. Rossetti had three siblings. An older brother, William edited his work, and was a Pre-Raphaelite archivist. His younger sister, Christina was a well noted poet who produced works which became almost as famous as those of her brother. His older and final sister, Maria wrote a commentary on the original Dante, and became an Anglican nun.

ools. His early education was at Kings College in London, which he attended from 1836 to 1841. His secondary education was at the Sass school, which according to Britannica was “…an old fashioned drawing school in Bloomsbury (Central London).” Conflicted as to whether to become a poet or a painter, Rossetti continued to the Royal Academy school, where he could do both.

After the 1850’s, Rossetti’s life slid rapidly downward. Elizabeth had become ill after their marriage, and in 1863, she died from an overdose of laudanum, causing Rossetti incredible grief. With her body, Rossetti buried the only full copy of. Meanwhile, in 1861, Rossetti published the very successful The Early Italian Poets. In 1866, he published two sonnets, “Soul’s Beauty”,
