Allegory of the Cave

Socrates clearly believed that the world revealed by our senses is

not the real world, but only an illusion of a true reality. The concept

that we are bound in darkness watching a play reel of half-truths is easily

comparable to the way our lives play out. Naked and without a concept of self,

we are thrust into the world. Maturing into our full potential as humans, we

learn the truths and laws of the world, and become adamantly attached to

this reality revealed by our human senses. It is this attachment to our sensual

perception of the world that our mind's eye is blinded to any other possibility.

Socrates' allegory of the cave comes to reveal why truth is hard to accept and

why once "prisoners" are shown the truth, they refuse to believe otherwise

and they revert to their old ways and beliefs.

My understanding of the world was endowed with a Christian perspective.

It is only for this reason why I am inclined to believe in God and an afterlife.

Because of my belief, I expect certain truths to reveal themselves after my
